PHOENIX REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM DECEMBER 4, 1987
1.0 INTRODUCTION
PHOENIX is a bulletin board program written in Borland's Turbo
Pascal. Phoenix runs well with most IBM "Compatibles"
including 80286 and 80386 models. It may no longer be
compatible with the IBM PCjr. Phoenix will run ONLY under
PC or MS-DOS versions 2.0 or higher! The best DOS version
to run Phoenix under is PC or MS-DOS 3.30 as the bugs found
in 2.x and 3.x versions of DOS are fixed in 3.30.
Beginning with version 1.0, Phoenix is distributed under the
"Shareware" concept. You are encouraged to distribute this
software to others as long as you DO NOT charge, in any
shape or form, for this program. What shareware means to you
is that you share in the profits from this endeavor.
Here is how this works. The Archive you downloaded
contains Phoenix with a serial number displayed in the
full-login mode and in the exit window when you quit Phoenix.
Let's just say for this example, it is serial number 0001.
When you send in your registration fee, you indicate you
are registering under serial number 0001. You will then
receive disks by mail with your own unique serial numbered copy.
We then, will send the owner of 0001 a check for $5.00
as a thank you for you registering your copy. As you can see,
only 12 registrants are required under your serial number to
have paid back your registration fee! WHEN YOU REGISTER,
BE SURE TO BE ACCURATE IN TELLING US WHAT THE SERIAL NUMBER
OF YOUR COPY IS! Use the invoice form included in this
archive, called INVOICE (print it out by typing
"COPY INVOICE PRN").
SITE LICENSES ARE EXPLAINED IN SITES.DOC.
Upgrades will only be offered beginning
with v1.0 as a base. The upgrade policy for future versions
will be announced with the new version. The finances for
shareware only begin with v1.0 so if you registered v1.2 COLLIE
or earlier, that was to an individual and not the project and
those funds cannot be applied to the GeneSys 'pool' for
shareware. We thank you on behalf of the receiving party
(Dan Plunkett, or The Forbin Project depending on the version)
for your earlier registration but we are sorry that it cannot
be applied as credit to v1.0 or above.
Upgrades will apply only to major version changes (ex 2.0,
3.0,etc). Maintenance versions which mainly are for bug fixes,
are listed with a decimal change, (ex. 1.1, 1.3), and will
be automatically mailed to registered users only and at no
charge. Maintenance versions will not be made available to
the general public. A private bulletin board system will be
installed for registered users only and should be online
sometime early 1988. Registered users will be notified
by mail and will be given their logon names and passwords.

1.1 IMPORTANT NOTICE
Thank you for taking the time and expense to obtain Phoenix.
We're sure after you've had a chance to look Phoenix over,
you'll agree it is a powerful bulletin board program which
combines both speed and finesse.
It's important to note that very few users of ShareWare
programs ever actually send in their registration.
Being a sysop, your rewards for running your board
are often a simple "thanks". We hope after you've used Phoenix,
and have chosen it over the many other programs available,
you'll show your support with your registration, thereby
allowing YOU to share in this support concept.
In any case, feel free to distribute Phoenix and to send us any
comments or suggestion via net mail.
1.2 DISCLAIMER
The GeneSys Project and its members shall not be held responsible
for any damage incurred by the user to hardware, software, or
peripheral devices while running Phoenix. ALL responsibility
lies with the user of the software. Since you receive your
copy free by downloading it, responsibility lies with you for
determining merchantability and suitability
(whether it will do the job you wish).
You show acceptance of this by registering. If
you do not register, then you declare that you believe the
product is not suitable for your uses and the GeneSys Project
will entertain no remedies or responsibilities for providing
suitable product to you.
1.3 COPYRIGHT NOTICE
PHOENIX v1.0 is Copyright (C) 1987 by The GeneSys Project.
Phoenix and affiliate programs distributed with it are not to
be modified or distributed in modified form without the express
written consent of The GeneSys Project.
Phoenix is NOT to be sold, used or modified for or with illegal
intent under the penalty of law.
1.4 CREDITS
Phoenix version 1.0 Development Team consists of the
following members of GeneSys:
Bennett Griffin, Chuck Gorish, Dan Plunkett and Ryan Katri
800/1 800/3 800/4
---------------------------------------------------
Many hours have been spent in the development of Phoenix --
finding bugs, changing formats, and testing things like the
Menu and Message Systems. A lot of dedicated people have run
up VERY healthy phone bills just so Phoenix could be
brought to you.
PHOENIX REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM DECEMBER 4, 1987
We would like to mention some of those people here:
- Glen Cranford of Phoenix North Mesquite 861/1
- Jim Hood of The Sword of Fire 898/1
- Charles Besson of RoyaLink 871/1
- Bob Cook of Tandy Hotline 823/1
- Ron Brown of Starship 861/3
- Plus the many other Testers and AreaHosts!
Thanks, guys, for your help!
Please note when reading this documentation, that many
options within Phoenix have ADVANCED USES AND OPTIONS.
Read and understand this documentation BEFORE you refer
to the this chapter. Phoenix can now be changed
enough so if the advanced options are used, there
can be no excuse for two boards to look or operate alike, even
in their menus! Log onto any of the above boards to see
what we mean. Try out both text and ansi.
IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY RUNNING Collie v1.2 or EARLIER BE SURE TO READ BELOW
USERS OF PREVIOUS COLLIE AND COLOSSUS VERSIONS - read
the ENTIRE documentation as MOST of your system will
have to be re-configured! IF YOU HAVE AN EXISTING SYSTEM
RUNNING, YOU MUST RUN CONVERT BEFORE TRYING TO BRING UP
PHOENIX v1.0 as many of the support file structures have
changed. Many commands and what they do have been changed.
As always, be sure you have backed up your system
before attempting re-configuration.
NO utilities written for COLLIE v1.2 or earlier COLOSSUS
versions should be used on Phoenix system files! There will
most likely be damage to the files, or at best, record
information may be changed. Developers have been made aware
of the changes and will be producing new versions to work
with Phoenix.

ABOUT ABBREVIATIONS used in this documentation:
A tutorial on DOS file naming conventions is beyond the
scope of this manual. If you are not familiar with filenames,
extensions, and wild cards, please consult your DOS manual.
When we explicitly give a file an extension, ONLY that extension
will be allowed and Phoenix expects that file to be a text file.
Files with:
.BBS are expected to be TEXT ONLY (or files of record when
used by Phoenix internally). Phoenix will not normally
treat these files as ansi files unless you force it to.
.CLR are expected to be ANSI only files and Phoenix will
ALWAYS treat them as such.
.* Indicates that the filename can have BOTH extensions.
Example: WELCOME1.* in this documentation means that
the file with the first name of welcome1 can be either
welcome1.bbs or welcome1.clr. If it is an optional
file, and you choose to use it, at LEAST the .bbs
file should exist. If a user does not want ansi,
Phoenix will look for the .bbs file and if present,
display that file. If a user has ansi on, the .clr
file will be used. If he has ansi on, and the .clr
file is not there, the .bbs file will be used, BUT
if the user does not want ansi, and the .bbs file
is not there but the .clr file is, Phoenix will not
use the .clr file.
Phoenix will always default to the .bbs file if the .clr file is not
present. If neither file is present, nothing is sent to the
user, and Phoenix continues as though the file was never called.
Phoenix features marked with a ">" indicates that feature has
advanced options, and a more complete description is
given at the end of the documentation in the chapter called
ADVANCED OPTIONS. Only the minimal information will be given
to be able to use the option's basic features within this
standard documentation.
